Wolf monitoring in Scandinavia: evaluating counts of packs and reproduction events

چکیده

Large carnivores are elusive and use large areas, which causes monitoring to be challenging costly. Moreover, management reduce conflicts simultaneously ensure long-term population viability require precise estimates. In Scandinavia, the of wolves (Canis lupus) is primarily based on counting packs, identifying reproduction, genetically territorial from noninvasive DNA samples. We assessed reliability wolf in Scandinavia by estimating detectability pairs, reproduction. Our data, comprising snow-tracking data DNA-identified individuals 2005–2016, covered 11 consecutive winter seasons (Oct–Mar). Among 343 cases where we identified a pack, were also detected same area during previous season 323 (94.2%) cases. only 6 remaining 20 cases, there was no prior knowledge area. 328 reproduction events (litter born pack), 97% period rest ≥1 year later kinship assessments all DNA-detected individuals. These results suggest that failed detect few packs with followed breeding. Yearly continuous updates pedigree allowed us retrospectively identify not earlier.

Statistical Monitoring of Rare Events in Healthcare

There are miscellaneous quality characteristics in healthcare which are interested to be monitored. However, monitoring each characteristic needs a special statistical method. There are some characteristics with very small incidence rates that it’s usually considered not to be necessary to monitoring them, since their incidence rates are so small that p and np charts are not able to monitor t...

Intensity of Territorial Marking Predicts Wolf Reproduction: Implications for Wolf Monitoring

BACKGROUND The implementation of intensive and complex approaches to monitor large carnivores is resource demanding, restricted to endangered species, small populations, or small distribution ranges. Wolf monitoring over large spatial scales is difficult, but the management of such contentious species requires regular estimations of abundance to guide decision-makers. The integration of wolf ma...

Population Ecology Estimating Occupancy and Predicting Numbers of Gray Wolf Packs in Montana Using Hunter Surveys

Reliable knowledge of the status and trend of carnivore populations is critical to their conservation and management. Methods for monitoring carnivores, however, are challenging to conduct across large spatial scales. In the Northern Rocky Mountains, wildlife managers need a timeand costefficient method for monitoring gray wolf (Canis lupus) populations. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (MFWP) ...

Evaluating prey switching in wolf-ungulate systems.

Wolf restoration has become a widely accepted conservation and management practice throughout North America and Europe, though the ecosystem effects of returning top carnivores remain both scientific and societal controversies. Mathematical models predicting and describing wolf-ungulate interactions are typically limited to the wolves' primary prey, with the potential for prey switching in wolf...
